Instagram Teen Accounts: what they do, how to supervise, and what they miss

Quick answer

Instagram Teen Accounts, launched in September 2024, put every user under 18 into stricter default settings: private accounts, messages only from people they follow, the most restrictive content setting, a reminder after 60 minutes and sleep mode from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Teens under 16 need a parent’s permission to loosen them.

Key takeaways

  • Teens are placed in Teen Accounts automatically.
  • Under 16, loosening any setting or going Live needs a parent.
  • Supervision lets you set time limits and see who your teen messaged, but not the messages.
  • A 2025 independent test found many of the safety tools didn’t work as promised.

Default settings for teens

  • Private account: for all new sign-ups under 18 and existing users under 16
  • Messages: only from people they follow or are already connected to
  • Tags and mentions: only from people they follow
  • Strictest filter on offensive comments and message requests
  • Most restrictive sensitive-content setting
  • A reminder to leave the app after 60 minutes a day
  • Sleep mode from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., with notifications muted

Content limits

In October 2025, Meta set Teen Accounts to show content modeled on a 13+ movie rating by default, hiding things like strong language, risky stunts and drug paraphernalia and blocking searches for terms like “alcohol” and “gore.” Teens can’t follow accounts that regularly post adult content. Parents can choose an even stricter Limited Content setting. Meta first described this as “PG-13” and later agreed to scale back that label after objections from the Motion Picture Association.

What needs a parent’s permission

  • Under 16: changing any default to be less strict
  • Under 16: going Live, or turning off the blur on suspected nudity in messages
  • Any supervised teen: loosening any setting
  • Any teen: opting into more mature content

How to set up supervision

  1. Create your own Instagram account if you don’t have one.
  2. On your teen’s phone, open Settings, then Family Center, and start supervision.
  3. Your teen sends you the invitation link, for example by text.
  4. Open the link while logged into your own account and accept.
  5. Your teen confirms within 48 hours.
  6. Set daily time limits and blocked hours, and review any requests to change settings.

What supervision shows you

  • Requests to change settings, which you can approve or deny
  • Who your teen messaged in the past 7 days (not the messages)
  • The topics your teen has chosen to see
  • Daily time limits and hours when Instagram is blocked

Facebook, Messenger and AI

Teen Accounts expanded to Facebook and Messenger in 2025, with similar time reminders and overnight quiet mode. In January 2026, Meta paused teens’ access to its AI characters while it builds a new version; the general Meta AI assistant remains available.

What independent testing found

In September 2025, a group including former Meta engineer Arturo Béjar, the Molly Rose Foundation and researchers at NYU and Northeastern tested 47 of Instagram’s teen safety tools. They rated 30 as ineffective or no longer available, 9 as partly working and 8 as working as described. Settings help, but they don’t replace talking with your teen.

Why it matters

Families suing Meta allege Instagram was designed to keep children using it and harmed their mental health, and that safeguards came too late. Meta denies the claims. In 2026 juries in Los Angeles and Santa Fe ruled against Meta; it is appealing.

Common questions

What age do Instagram Teen Accounts apply to?

All Instagram users under 18 are placed in Teen Accounts. The strictest rules, where a parent must approve any loosening, apply to teens under 16.

Can my teen turn off Teen Account settings?

Teens 16 and 17 can change some settings themselves unless they are supervised. Under 16, a parent must approve any change that makes settings less strict.

Can parents read Instagram messages with supervision?

No. Supervision shows who your teen messaged in the past week, not what was said.

Do Instagram Teen Accounts actually work?

They make some defaults safer, but a 2025 independent test rated most of the 47 tools it checked as ineffective or unavailable. Use them alongside regular conversations with your teen.
