Roblox parental controls and safety: a 2026 guide for parents

Quick answer

Link a parent account to your child’s Roblox account to set content maturity, chat, spending and screen-time limits. Since 2026, children 5 to 8 get Roblox Kids accounts and 9 to 15 get Roblox Select accounts with tighter defaults, and chat requires an age check. The biggest warning sign of grooming is a new contact asking your child to move to another app.

Key takeaways

  • Parent controls only work after you link your own account to your child’s.
  • Users who haven’t completed an age check can’t chat, and chat is limited to similar ages.
  • Predators often start on Roblox and try to move children to Discord, Snapchat or other apps.
  • If something has happened: don’t delete anything, save usernames and messages, and report it.

How to set up Roblox parental controls

  1. Create your own Roblox account and link it to your child’s account as a parent.
  2. Set the content maturity level (Minimal, Mild, Moderate or Restricted) and block specific experiences if you want to.
  3. Choose who can chat with your child, separately for in-game chat, direct chat and party chat.
  4. Review and remove connections you don’t recognize.
  5. Set a monthly spending limit and turn on spending notifications.
  6. Set a daily screen-time limit and check the weekly list of top experiences your child played.

What changed in 2025 and 2026

  • Roblox Kids (ages 5–8) and Roblox Select (ages 9–15) accounts became available worldwide in June 2026. Kids accounts see only Minimal or Mild experiences with chat off by default; Select accounts see experiences up to Moderate.
  • Since January 2026, users must complete an age check, by facial age estimation or ID, before they can chat, and chat is limited to people of similar ages.
  • Users 13 and older can use “Trusted Connections” to chat with people they know.
  • Roblox raised its most mature content rating to 18+ and blocked unrated experiences in 2025.

Warning signs of grooming

  • A new online “friend” who gives your child a lot of attention or flattery
  • Gifts of Robux, in-game items or gift cards
  • Claims to be the same age as your child
  • Requests to move the conversation to Discord, Snapchat or another app
  • Requests for photos, personal information or secrecy
  • Your child becoming secretive, anxious or withdrawn after playing

What to do if it happens

  1. Stay calm and tell your child they are not in trouble.
  2. Don’t delete anything. Screenshot usernames, messages and any gifts or payments, on Roblox and on any app the contact moved to.
  3. Block and report the account on Roblox and the other apps.
  4. Report it to NCMEC’s CyberTipline at CyberTipline.org or 1-800-843-5678, to the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI, or to local police.
  5. If your child is in distress, call or text 988. In an emergency, call 911.

The Roblox lawsuits

Families are suing Roblox, and in some cases Discord, alleging that weak safeguards let adults find, groom and exploit children. Federal cases are combined in MDL No. 3166 in the Northern District of California, created in December 2025. Several states have also sued. The companies deny the claims and have asked the court to send the cases to arbitration; a hearing is set for January 13, 2027.

We are not yet accepting Roblox or Discord cases, but you can leave your details and we will contact you when we do.

Common questions

Is Roblox safe for my child?

It can be safer with parental controls, an age-appropriate account and regular conversations. The main risk is contact from adults, so watch for anyone asking your child to move to another app.

Can I see who my child talks to on Roblox?

With a linked parent account you can view, block and report your child’s connections and control who can chat with them. You can’t read every message.

What is Roblox Select?

An account type for ages 9 to 15, available worldwide since June 2026, with experiences up to the Moderate rating and tighter defaults on social features unless a parent approves.

Is there a Roblox lawsuit?

Yes. Federal cases are combined in MDL No. 3166 in Northern California, and several states have sued. Roblox denies the claims.
