Iowa social media addiction lawsuit
Families in Iowa are holding Meta, TikTok, Snap and YouTube responsible for harm to their children, one case at a time. Here is who may qualify, how Iowa cases are filed, and the deadline that applies.
Quick answer
Iowa families can bring individual claims, not a class action, against Meta, TikTok, Snap and Google (YouTube) when a child was harmed after heavy use before 18. In Iowa, an injury claim generally must be filed within 2 years; a minor's deadline is extended so they have at least 1 year after turning 18 to file. A free review checks your family’s deadline.
Who may qualify in Iowa
- The child lives or lived in Iowa and used Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat or YouTube regularly before 18
- The child developed depression, anxiety, an eating disorder, self-harm, sleep problems or another serious harm
- No diagnosis? 20 or more hours a week on one platform before 18 may support an exposure claim
- Families of a young person who died by suicide after heavy social media use
- An adult contacted the child through a platform and pressured, threatened or exploited them
Iowa filing deadlines
| Personal injury / product liability | 2 years | Most injury claims, including claims that a product caused harm, must be filed within 2 years. | Iowa Code § 614.1(2) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Injured as a minor | — | A minor's deadline is extended so they have at least 1 year after turning 18 to file. | Iowa Code § 614.8(2) |
| Wrongful death | 2 years | A claim for a death is generally treated as an injury claim and must be filed within 2 years. | Iowa Code § 614.1(2) |
| Product liability outer limit (repose) | — | A product claim generally cannot be filed more than 15 years after the product was first bought, leased, or installed, unless the maker expressly warranted it longer. The limit does not apply if the seller misrepresented facts or hid information and that caused the harm. | Iowa Code § 614.1(2A) |
Iowa has no separate wrongful death filing statute. § 614.1(2) covers 'injuries to the person', and it does not mention death expressly. Applying the 2-year rule to death claims is how this provision is commonly read (death claims go through the survival statute, § 611.20), but I did not confirm that from statute text, so the wrongful death item is medium confidence. The 15-year limit in § 614.1(2A) expressly covers death claims. Personal injury, minor, and repose rules were read on the official Iowa Legislature PDFs.
These are the general rules in the statutes. Courts apply exceptions, and which rule applies depends on the facts, so a lawyer should confirm your family’s deadline. This is general information, not legal advice.
How Iowa cases are filed
This is not a class action. A Iowa family’s claim is filed in the child’s name. Federal cases from every state are grouped in MDL No. 3047 in Northern California so evidence and pre-trial rulings are shared; about 3,800 were pending in October 2026. Some cases are filed in state court instead. The lawyers decide with your family where your case belongs.
What Iowa has done
Iowa was not one of the 33 states in the October 2023 federal lawsuit against Meta. On April 8, 2026, Iowa's attorney general filed its own lawsuit against Meta in Polk County District Court. The suit says Instagram was designed to be addictive for Iowa youth and misrepresents how safe it is for minors.
Iowa's attorney general sued TikTok in Polk County District Court in January 2024, claiming TikTok misled parents about children's access to mature content. The Iowa Supreme Court later heard TikTok's appeal on jurisdiction. The attorney general also sued Roblox on December 16, 2025, over child endangerment.
Lawsuits and laws by the state are separate from a family’s own claim. They do not file or replace a claim for your child.
